A Day at the Beach with Jan McCarthy

Some people go to the beach with a towel and a bag of snacks.
A day at the beach with Jan McCarthy is something entirely different.

Jan has an extraordinary eye for creating beauty in everyday life. Everything she touches becomes a composition — thoughtful, intentional, and quietly artistic. Spending time with her is less like showing up for a casual outing and more like stepping into a living still life.

This particular afternoon began near her home along the coast, where she had orchestrated what felt almost like a set for a photograph. A vintage beach umbrella anchored the scene. Low wicker chairs faced the water. Baskets were filled with linens, glassware, and small thoughtful details that transformed the sand into something resembling an outdoor salon.

It was not elaborate for the sake of spectacle. It was simply Jan — someone who naturally arranges the world with care and an artist’s sensibility.

As the waves rolled in and the afternoon light softened, Cyndi contributed her own magic, preparing the food that filled our baskets. Fresh bites, simple and beautiful, appeared on linen napkins while chilled rosé was poured into glasses. What could have been a quick visit to the shore became a slow gathering — a small celebration of friendship, light, and the pleasure of being together.

What I always notice about Jan is her generosity. She doesn’t create beauty only for herself. She creates experiences and shares them. Her home, her gatherings, and even an afternoon at the beach become invitations into a world where attention and care matter.

As a photographer, I’m always drawn to moments like this — when everyday life quietly becomes art. The textures of straw hats and linen. Sunlight on glass. The pale blue horizon beyond the umbrella. It felt less like documenting an outing and more like capturing a small living installation of friendship and creativity.

Some days stay with you because of where you went.
Others stay with you because of who created the experience.

A day at the beach with Jan McCarthy was one of those days.
