Dayna Pink
I met Dayna before the session, at a social event, and she is exactly the kind of person you are instantly drawn to. Calm, elegant, warm. Someone who makes you feel at ease and curious at the same time. That quality is woven into everything about her, including the way she dresses. As a costume designer, she understands better than most how clothing shapes presence.
Dayna came to the studio prepared and needed little direction. Still, being photographed asks something of everyone. Seeing yourself through a lens is simply not a perspective we are used to. I photograph myself regularly as part of my practice and know the feeling well. My intention is always the same: to find what is truest and most luminous about you, the way others already see you, and show it back to you.
Spending time with Dayna, even briefly, left me wanting more of the conversation. I have a feeling our paths will cross again, and I am looking forward to it.
"I want to unfold. I don't want to stay folded anywhere,
because where I am folded, there I am a lie."
— Rainer Maria Rilke
What really matters to you?
Well as I get older that is an evolving concept. Right now, it is sleep, family, friendships, nature, movement, kindness, connection and artistry.
What brings you happiness?
All of the above and a nice morning matcha.
What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced?
Oh Boy. Aging. Relationship evolution, both with friends and family. Trying to be the best version of myself and sometimes it is just trying to be a version that I can live with. Did I mention aging?
What would you change if you could?
Nothing. If I changed it I run the risk of not learning it.
What single word do you identify with?
Today I think it is Today.
