When Women Gather
Some photography opportunities arrive unexpectedly.
My friend Cyndi Finkle had asked if I could help her cater a small gathering she was working on. At the last minute she suggested something simple: bring your camera.
The evening was hosted by Sharon and Dana in Sharon’s home and brought together a group of thoughtful women for conversation and connection. The gathering celebrated author Dr. Kerry Burnight and her book, and the atmosphere felt immediately warm and welcoming. Cyndi prepared a beautiful spread of food that invited everyone to slow down, sit together, and enjoy the evening.
What struck me most was the energy in the room.
There is a particular feeling that emerges when women gather with intention. The conversations are open and generous. People arrive curious about one another and leave feeling more connected than when they arrived.
I moved quietly through the evening with my camera, photographing the gathering as it unfolded. My approach in these moments is not to direct, but to observe. I look for the moments that reveal the spirit of the evening — laughter in the kitchen, glasses raised around the table, someone leaning in to listen closely to another woman’s story.
Photography in settings like this becomes something more than documentation. It becomes a visual record of connection.
As the evening unfolded, I was reminded how much I enjoy photographing people in the spaces where they naturally gather — homes, studios, and creative environments where conversation and life are already happening. When people feel comfortable, the images become honest and alive.
This evening reinforced something I’ve come to understand about my work.
I am a storyteller.
Every gathering holds a story. Every space has its own atmosphere. My role as a photographer is to notice those moments and translate them into images that hold onto them.
