A New Chapter | Maternity Photography at The Arlen Studio

There is something special about photographing the children of people you once raised your own children alongside.

This maternity session felt especially meaningful because of that connection. Our families were part of the same church community, raising our children together through the everyday rhythms of life. Every summer we would reunite at Family Camp near Yosemite, watching our kids run freely and form lifelong memories.

Now those children are adults beginning families of their own and photographing this season for them felt full circle.

This was my first maternity session, and I could not have asked for a more beautiful introduction into this kind of work. The entire session felt calm, natural, and intimate. We kept the styling simple with soft tones, natural light, relaxed denim, and quiet moments that allowed the focus to stay on her connection to this baby and the anticipation of what is about to begin.

What I loved most was witnessing the mixture of strength and tenderness that pregnancy carries. There is a grounded confidence that comes with stepping into motherhood, while also holding the vulnerability of change and anticipation. My goal was simply to create photographs that felt honest and timeless. Nothing overly styled. Just real emotion, softness, and connection.

The light at The Arlen Studio was perfect for this kind of session. The neutral tones, soft walls, and natural textures gave everything an editorial feel while remaining warm and personal. The mirror portraits quickly became some of my favorites because they added another layer of reflection and symbolism to this season of life.

As I photographed her, I kept thinking about time. How quickly it moves. How one season quietly becomes another before we fully realize it. One moment we are parents raising young children together, and the next we are watching those same children prepare to welcome babies of their own.

It was an honor to document the beginning of this new chapter for their family and I already know the next photographs will be even sweeter once their baby arrives.
