Kate Anders

Kate was 79 when I photographed her on 11/2/23.

What really matters to you?

As I enter my eightieth year, I appreciate this question. What matters to me has continually shifted over the years. At five it was most likely what I’d get for Christmas from Santa. Today it’s connection with family, friends, and nature. I’m interested in experiences instead of things. I’ve returned to my childlike sense of wonder, anticipation, and innocence. The ordinary makes me smile: the sound of a kind word, the vibrant color of fall, and the quietness of the first dusting of snow.

What brings you happiness?

Happiness is tethered to gratitude and appreciation. The more I appreciate all that is in my life, the happier I have become.

What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced?

Challenges, whether the death of my daughter or daily trials, offer opportunities for a deeper understanding and an appreciation of life. When I remember to surrender to them, the challenges become lessons and eventually gifts.

What would you change if you could?

I wish I had understood the value and the healing power of forgiveness, for myself and others, sooner.

Which single word do you identify with?

Joy
